DR Strings Bass Extra Life™ Red Coated 5s, .045-.125, Red Devils, MR5-RD-45star rating 4MatNovember 15, 2009i agree w/ the previous review, as the D and G are slightly lighter red than the other 3 strings, but this is barely noticeable. otherwise, these strings feel great. the coating puts a really nice feel under your fingers. the red devil color looks great on my red J bass, and the sound is very clear without being sparkly (which I can't stand. good for pianos, not for me. I like BASS) Used to use DR lo-riders long ago and loved them, but I broke them so often I switched to Boomers (which i also love, and which i never broke) but after trying out a pair of these on a friends bass I decided to try em on mine and hopefully I won't break 'em. So far so good, been about 4 weeks, which is about twice as long as my lo-riders would last (I pop hard, and always broke the lo-rider G. so far these are holding up!!!). Nothing but good things to say except the $40 price tag, which is twice as much as my boomers, but hey these are red and hopefully the promise of the extra life coating holds up so they're worth the price. Cause they sure look and feel and sound good.

I spoke to DR about this and they said that the problem has been solved. The sent me a fresh pack and mentioned that they were checked for consistency before they were shipped. When they arrived...same thing. All strings were different shades of red thus only 4 stars.
